Irish music for the masses
I've had the opportunity to record many different iterations of Ned's group, but my favorite live recording by far is the one that I captured at a benefit concert that the Giblin's held in January 2005. This song is called "Rainy Night in SoHo" and features David Lally on vocals, Ned Giblin on mandolin, Tim Foley on tin whistle, Matt Hensley (of Flogging Molly) on accordian, Brad Rehn on drums and myself on djembe. It was a gloomy day the entire event as bands performed on an outdoor stage. Fortunately it hadn't rained up to that point. That all changed, however, when a cutting chill blew in followed by a torrential downpour. The crowd of 1000 or so were drenched and were loving it! It was probably one of my most memorable stage moments. Recording NotesThe FOH had a 24-channel Mackie board and I had two submixes running to the recording rig, one for vocals and another for instruments. It wasn't optimal. I would've preferred direct outs for each channel, but we we're unfamiliar with the board and had to set up in a hurry. Most of the credit goes to Clay Colton who was running the board (and essentially my submixes). This same event yielded recordings of the Wayne Johnson Trio, Sean & Sara Watkins of Nickelcreek and altrock group Faceles. |
