Hard-twanging Classic Country
I had the privilege to be invited down to Winston's (one of my favorite, and most often used, live venues for recording bands) by Jeff Houck, whom I had met before through an unsolicited recording of Married By Elvis (MbE just happened to be opening up for Shoestring Strap—whom I was hired to record that night). Well, it turned out that Jeff along with a couple of the boys from Shoestring Strap and two other very talented musicians formed a smoking country group called Three Chord Justice. It was their first live performance and they were polished like fine silver! They had a great array of classic country covers and sprinkled in a few originals for good measure. Take a listen for yourself! As far as the recording was concerned, I had the house direct outs: kick, snare, hi-hat, 3 toms, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, pedal steel and four vocals. In addition, I snaked in two Shure PG81s for the drumkit overheads, threw a PG56 on the electric guitar amp and the pedal steel amp and then tried out a combo of mics (a PG52 and 57) on the bass cabinet. I also set up my Audio Technica AT2020 to capture the room (just for good measure). Total track count: 21. Check out Three Chord Justice on their MySpace page. |
