San Diego songwriting done Irish-style
I've had the pleasure of knowing and playing with David Lally for quite some time. As an Irishman, he's got a knack for good music and for writing some interesting licks and lyrics as well. He's a mainstay of the Irish band Brehon Law, but takes off on his own ventures on occasion. He can be seen playing with Brehon Law, Tim Foley, Patric Petrie and others around San Diego, though his career frequently takes him away from playing too many live shows. Lally has a website and a MySpace page. Recording NotesThis recording was done at David's CD release party in July 2005 at the Belly Up in support of his first full album "Often One." The event was amazing. The track featured here is the live version of "Sprawl" and it features David of guitar and vocals, Ned Giblin on mandolin, Brad Rehn on congas and myself on drums. To get the tracks, I plugged The Lab directly into the monitor board. Here's a little inside secret: though I'd played with David many many times before, this night was my first time playing most of these particular songs (particularly this one) with Lally, but I think we nailed it. Oh, and there was no bass player during the performance, I later overdubbed the bass part in my studio during mixdown (it's subtle, but there.)
