About Us/Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the Live Audio Lab?

The Lab is one man and a recording rig used to capture live performances.
  • Is this your full-time job?

No. I have a wonderful career and a wonderful family. The Lab is one of my creative outlets... a hobby, of sorts, which allows me some freedom when recording bands and some limitations when trying to find time to fit it into my already busy schedule.  Please check the calendar for availability.
  • How does the Lab work?

Basically, all I do is run lines from the direct outputs of the venue's FOH mixing board into a DAW. Anyone with a bit of capital can do it, but for most musicians, they can't record while playing, and not everyone takes the time to do it right (unlike some venues that offer to make you a recording but just slap together a shoddy stereo mix).
  • Can you record any performance?

No. Depending on the venue and the group, the Lab is limited as to what it can record. The Lab's primary function is to capture audio from the FOH board or PA system. So theoretically if there's no board or PA, that means there's no way for us to record your show. There are special circumstances where we can accommodate small bands. Please contact me to see if the Lab can record your show.
  • How many channels can you record?

My current configuration allows me to track up to 34 channels.
  • Do you do live sound?

    No.
  • Are you a record label?

No, but we will be working closely with a new, independent San Diego North County label/professional studio.
  • How much do you charge to record a show?

See the pricing page for packages and costs.
  • I have a digital audio workstation/program at home. Can I mix the music myself?

Yes. I encourage this! If you have the know-how and the gear, or have an engineer on retainer, we offer you copies of the individual raw audio tracks as part of our Basic Recording Service for you to play with in just about any program, from Apple's GarageBand to ProTools.
  • Is there a catch?  Do you guarantee your work?

The only catch is that live recordings are a hit-or-miss affair. Unlike professional studio recordings where things can be done repetitively in a controlled environment, a live recording is a one-shot deal and can be ruined by many things, including: a poor performance, faulty venue wiring, drunk soundmen, random technical glitches, acts of God, software & hardware failure, as well as many other unforeseen gremlins.  I plan ahead and do as much as humanly possible to prevent controllable problems.  I can't guarantee every session will come out as expected, but I can guarantee I'm doing all I can to make it the best it can be.
  • What are your payment & refund policies?

Payments are due in full at the time recording services are rendered.  Accepted forms of payment are cash or personal check.  I provide the option to refund your money if a technical, software, hardware and/or operational failure caused by The Live Audio Lab results in unsatisfactory service and/or product.  However, refunds are not given to artists for poor performances or "off nights."  Meaning, if your bass player shows up drunk, or your drummer breaks a drumhead, or a rowdy fan grabs one your microphone and sings, you don't get a refund (it's beyond my control).  Refunded sessions remain in the possession of the Live Audio Lab.
